David Chandler is a painter, sculptor and printmaker. His themes are taken from obscure mediaeval obsessions, which he thinks are possibly still ours as well: the hope for peace, consolation for really bad luck, the fear of physical pain and the healing power of colour or at least pleasure in it. There's an overlooked visionary painting in the National Gallery in which a long forgotten saint, Clare is offered a tiny book of peace. David makes the subject of the book the central motif of this exhibition and through it creates an object of unusual potency. David's work first attracted critical attention in the late 1980's when he showed at international print exhibitions. His works can be seen in the British Museum, the Whitworth Gallery, Manchester and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge as well as other important UK university collections. He currently teaches film and media at Kingston College. |
