The Penny School Gallery, Kingston College is proud to invite Olivier Hess to exhibit his photographs. Now successful Travel Photographer working in Europe, Russia, Iran, Americas and the Bahamas, a former student at Kingston College, he was in the first intake in the Department of Design Studies when it moved to the Richmond Road site in 1995. His own projects tend to deal with cultures, communities and environments as well as social and political issues.
“ The title ‘Dullsville’ reflects a common thread which emerges in my images regardless of which country I’m photographing. The most important aspect is to become familiar with the place and get a feeling for its way of life by immersing myself into its culture. For me there seems to be a feeling of ‘nostalgia’ which connects places which may at first seem very disparate and exotic. The title of the exhibition reflects our notion of what is beautiful. A pair of smoke stacks in a barren landscape has its own beauty. My aim is to lift the veil and reveal the truths of each country which might both delight and terrify us at the same time”.
