The Penny School Gallery begins its new season of exhibitions with two artists, who only met recently, yet both are committed to Kingston College. Brian Ash is a College Governor. While working in the pressurised and demanding electronics and computer industry, he was seduced by the beauty of wood, which he now turns into vessels of all shapes and sizes. Maia Diver lectures in the Department of Art & Design, She weaves colours into geometric shapes using silks, chenilles, cottons and rayons to make rich muted wall hangings and artefacts, On meeting, both artists discovered that they have a similar philosophy when creating their works. Both initially pre plan each piece, but as it emerges, the rhythms of the woodgrains or threads and the interaction of newly emerging relationships of colours are first analysed then manipulated. The final form and pattern is developed in direct response to the materials being used, consequently each piece remains unique. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
