The exhibition will be opened by Jacqueline Wilson, the Children’s Laureate
The Penny School Gallery is pleased to welcome Nicholas Allan, children's author and illustrator. His award-winning books and television series are well loved by both children and parents alike for their humorous take on life. With engaging drawings and provocative narrative, his books especially appeal to children’s insatiable curiosity and delight in the risqué and forbidden.
Following a BA from the Slade School of Fine Art, Nicholas completed an MA in Creative writing at East Anglia under the tutelage of Malcolm Bradbury. Since then he has written several radio plays for BBC Radio 4. He has also written and illustrated over thirty books for children. These include several best sellers, The Queen’s Knickers, Jesus’ Christmas Party (subsequently adapted into a musical for schools), Heaven and recently, Where Willy Went. They have been translated into twenty languages and are frequently included in anthologies. In 2000 his book Hilltop Hospital was adapted into a television series for CITV. It has won two international prizes, was twice nominated for a BAFTA before winning one in 2003 for best pre-school animation.
Nicholas’s illustrations have been sold in various London auction houses and many are now in private collections. This is his first exhibition of original illustrations.
The exhibition will have examples from many of his books and will coincide with the publication of his new book More and More Rabbits. It will also include a preview of his forthcoming book, Picasso’s Trousers.
A series of one-day children’s workshops will be offered during the course of the exhibition. Please contact *Rosemary Williams for further information.
