Russell Coulson has spent his working life in the disciplined and demanding worlds of advertising. design and publishing. working to briefs and pleasing clients. In spite of this he has never lost his fundamental delight in the power of colour. shape and pattern or the thrill of drawing and the magical rhythms created by lines. and the immediacy of paint. An Increasingly electronic world has finally returned him. with great energy and excitement. to his creative beginnings. "Sun Chariots & Moonbeams" is an exuberant collection of explorations of, and responses to, the light and colour, shape and line, rhythm and movement that can be found in everything under the sun. Russell is excited by the arts of many world cultures that respond to these natural rhythms, and they provide him with inspiration for some explosive juxtapositions of intense colour" the "Sun Chariot" response. At the other end of the spectrum are the more subtle and tonally gentle "Moonbeam"pieces. Both approaches demonstrate Russell's delight in the relationships of colours one to another and the dynamics of the shape and line. Often a small doodle will set off an entire series of images and a new voyage of exploration and Investigation. And most frequentiy it is the simple things that tickle his creative eye the most.
