Glimpses of India is the result of Susan Beulah's fourth visit to India, this time to the coast of Kerala in the South. The unspoilt and remote fishing villages, untouched by time or tourism, have inspired her to create a whole new body of rich and vibrant work which is the genesis of her new exhibition.

Susan likes to work on the spot using watercolour, which she then develops into paintings, using acrylics, inthe privacy of her studio.

"My challenge as an artist is to recreate exotic places in my paintings. I analyse my subject, selecting the colours and shapes that express some of the feelings that I want to communicate. I am inspired by the simple but visually rich village life: palm trees and banana plants; burnt sienna , red earth and the bright blue of the sea; women cooking outside their homes under their multicoloured washing, or sitting, waiting for the exotically shaped fishing boats to bring in their catch of huge fish, so that they couldcarry them away on their heads"

"I was frequently surrounded by twenty or mor onlookers who would speculate about who or what I was painting. I felt compelled to put in accurately the details they wer anticipating such as the drape of a sari or the minutiae of a fishing boat. If I got it wrong a weathered finger would quickly point out my errors."
